1. How Fractal Work Emerged, and Why

Imagine if you could change the gravitational constant in physics how the universe would rearrange itself. Well, Andrew and Julian experimented with giving more and more autonomy and control to their workers. Now the business runs itself and productivity is up 500%. They essentially turned each employee into a one-person business responsible for its own p&l. Fascinating!

Optional Reading to do:
500%: How Two Pioneers Transformed Productivity – The First Truly Self-Leading Organisation
Intro and Chapters 1 and 2.

Sub-topics in the Chapters:

  • How changes in Context (global trade, labour arbitrage, IT, automation, environment……) have stressed the traditional organisational model
  • The Context of the 20th Century organisational model, hierarchical & function, why it worked as a coherent organisational system at the time.
  • What are the signs of this failure (ZIRP, Quantitive Easing, Unemployment, Poor quality Jobs, People worse off, limited job security, organisational failures….et. al.)
  • How most organisations adapt to this change in context by retaining the existing organisational structure and shaping improvement tools and automation to their existing structure.
  • Why Matt Black Systems introduced new organisational level contract measures and metrics.
  • How Matt Black Systems started off doing what everyone else does, by patching their existing organisational structure with Lean and Agile with little sustainable success.
