So, I’ve co-created with Gillian Lee, a set of “Choose Your Own Coaching Adventure” games similar to our other coaching games, but focused on teams and organizations.

Each game represents a different scenario with multiple challenges to overcome in order to produce a successful result. For this session, you “puppetmaster” two Agilists, an Enterprise Agile Coach and a team based Agile working with a large organization with many teams.

At the start of each game you’ll be presented with a description of the scenario and a choice of 3-5 actions you can take such as “Work with the team to figure out what they would like to do next” or “Present your recommended changes to the CTO.” Each action has the potential to uncover additional information and/or actions that you can take. There are many branching paths, and it will feel just like working with real people: determining what approach is appropriate in each situation: powerful questions, teaching, facilitation, or providing expertise. Along the way you’ll interact with teams, team members, stakeholders, and leaders in the organization.

You’ll have a chance to practice many coaching skills including: powerful questions, emotional intelligence, rapport building, acting as a mirror, encouraging and supporting learning and growth, and pivoting between coaching and providing expertise. The game is meant to be played in small groups of 2-4 people to encourage discussion and to provide an opportunity to learn from each other. Think “escape the room” style fun and collaboration.

To get an idea of what these games are like, you can try the ones we have online which are focused on individuals: (https://facilitivity.com/online-games/). In this session we’ll mostly be playing the game, but it is perfectly ok to be a spectator.

Agile, The Life-Size Board Game! https://agilenewengland.org/agile-the-life-size-board-game/ Mon, 20 Feb 2023 19:09:11 +0000 https://agilenewengland.org/?p=15074 Why do we work towards ever higher levels of Agility? Think for a moment of the team you were on, whether work related or not, that was the “team with the best results ever.” By definition, it had the best results ever, but I’ll bet morale was also high. This is why we strive for Agility. Results and morale go hand in hand and together create the most viable organizations.

In this game, the entire audience will be the playing pieces, navigating a whole-room maze to discover new markets and new products. Will you be able to generate enough money to stay in business? You’ll start as a “traditional” organization and have the opportunity to transform into a thriving Agile organization by applying concepts such as self-organization, cross-functional teams, MVPs, breaking work down by value, and more. Come to play and learn in a way that is only possible in-person! Then, bring the game back for your own in-person company event.

The Butterfly Effect https://agilenewengland.org/the-butterfly-effect/ Thu, 07 Jul 2016 16:07:50 +0000 https://dev.agilenewengland.org/?p=8448 A typical approach to making a change is to invest a great deal of effort into a campaign that meets unexpected resistance and results in a small change. Anyone that attempts to advance an organization’s level of Agile maturity is sure to run into this problem.

This highly interactive session introduces the idea of turning the process of introducing change upside down: moving from introducing change to enabling change and using a small amount of effort to effect a large change. The “Butterfly Effect” is based on using tools like ADKAR to determine the changes that are most likely to succeed and helping to implement those first.

The ADKAR model of individual change says that people change when they have the Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, and Ability (aka experience) to make the change in an environment where making the change is Reinforced (i.e. supported). By surveying the team’s Awareness, Desire, Knowledge, and Ability levels across a wide variety of possible changes, it is possible to find and implement the changes that are most likely to succeed.

Learning Outcomes

•  Four activities that you can use to effect change

•  Introduction to the ADKAR individual change management model

•  The relationship between the Sitir, Tuckman, and ADKAR change models

•  How to uncover and work with resistance

•  How to maximize your Return On Interaction (ROI)

•  The value of using an Agile Maturity Model

The Economics of Agile https://agilenewengland.org/the-economics-of-agile/ Thu, 05 Apr 2012 16:38:28 +0000 https://dev.agilenewengland.org/?p=10181 Traditionally, many organizations have measured their software development efforts solely in terms of process efficiency and cost. When teams introduce Agile methods, they are suddenly able to measure their efforts from a broader business perspective – such as impact to the top and bottom line. This session discusses how to measure and optimize the economics of your software development, make economics-based decisions, measure and reduce the cost of delay, gauge the full cost of development within an Agile environment, and discover and validate the value of your user stories.

About the speaker:

Damon Poole is Founder of Valtivity, an Agile coaching and training company specializing in helping companies discover and implement their ideal way of working. Damon is also a Senior Coach in Eliassen’s Agile practice. His twenty years of experience spans the gamut from small collocated teams all the way up 80 team shops doing global development. Damon was President of Agile New England from 2008–2010. He writes frequently on the topic of Agile development, is the author of the web book “Do It Yourself Agile,” and a pioneer in the area of Multistage Continuous Integration and mixing Scrum and Kanban.
